A Little History On Mulberry Silk

Silk is the fabric of emperors, kings and queens. It has an amazing past that I will only briefly share with you here. However, if you get some silk here, know that you are wearing a fabric that is thousands of years old.

Silk has been dated back over 5,000 years in China. In a tomb, a silk garment was discovered still preserved pretty well and it was dated that far back. Think about that for a minute... 5,000 years... that is an incredibly long time.

Ancient China invented and of course perfected the art of making silk fabric. It is harvested from silk filaments which come from the cocoon of a special moth. The Bombyx mori moth.

There are two types of silk to know about. You have wild silk and cultivated silk, better knows as mulberry silk. In China there is a tree called the white mulberry tree. It's leaves are actually extremely high in antioxidants.

Cultivated silk is cultivated because there are these rooms filled with tens of thousands of these silk worms. They live in very special climate in China and so does this mulberry tree. All day long they eat the mulberry leaves which ends up producing the highest quality silk.

Our story takes a turn in the sad direction because after the silkworm spins it's cocoon, it is killed. From this point the cocoon is unraveled and makes on incredibly long silk filament. It has to be unraveled because if it were cut, it would ruin the filament.

This filament is a perfect ivory color and is combined with four to six other filaments to create just one silk thread. At this point, looms will weave the silk threads into giant spools of silk fabric.

There are many weaves available. At both TrueMores.com and thisLook.com, we use the charmeuse or satin weave. It produces the classic silk look which is shiny on one side and matte on the other.

During this process, you also have different weights of silk. Without getting too complex, it's the amount of silk used. We carry 19 momme weight, 22, and 25 momme weight. All of these weights are heavy silks and the top in luxury.
